This is the plan H2O built for exactly this situation, and it starts at two lines rather than four. Both lines get 60GB at full speed (not shared, each) plus 5GB of hotspot and unlimited calling to 100+ countries. There is no overage: past the allowance speeds reduce and service continues. At $50 for the pair it undercuts most single lines from the major carriers.

The catch: Taxes are extra, roughly $1.60 to $3.00 a line before state tax, so budget nearer $55. The rate requires two or more lines on one account. There is no single-line equivalent at this price.

Every price here is the cost of two lines, not one. Watch for plans where the discount only starts at three or four lines — Boost's $25 tier, Cricket's 12-Month Unlimited and Visible's flat-rate plans all have no two-line discount at all, which does not make them bad, just not cheaper as a pair.

Total MAX does not: it carries premium data on 5G Ultra Wideband, so both lines get the fast version of the network. Best for Couples who travel separately, or live somewhere no single network reliably covers.

Why are two-line plans such bad value? +
Because carriers design multi-line discounts around four lines. The discount usually grows with each line added, so the jump from one to two is the smallest one: sometimes nothing at all. Plans that charge a flat per-line rate, like H2O and Ting, sidestep the problem entirely.
Is it cheaper to have two separate plans or one account? +
Usually one account, but not always. If neither plan offers a two-line discount, Visible and Boost's $25 tier are examples, two separate lines cost exactly the same and are simpler to split when someone moves out. Add the totals both ways before assuming.
Can two people share one data pool? +
On some plans. Lycamobile's $49 Family shares 40GB across the account, which suits an uneven pair. H2O and Total give each line its own allowance, which suits two heavy users. Shared is cheaper, separate avoids one person using everything.
Do both lines need to be on the same phone type? +
No. Any mix of iPhone and Android works, and each line can bring its own device. What matters is that both handsets are unlocked and compatible with the network, particularly for eSIM activation.
What happens if we split up? +
You port one number out to a new carrier, exactly as you would from any plan. The remaining line usually reverts to single-line pricing, which on a plan like H2O means losing the multi-line rate entirely: worth knowing before choosing a plan whose whole value is the pair rate.
Is a family plan worth it for just two people? +
Rarely. Family pricing is tuned for four, so at two lines you are paying into a structure you are not using. The plans on this page either price per line honestly or discount at two specifically, which is what you want.
