The Samsung Convoy or Gusto came out in 2013. Mostly no: the Gusto and older Convoys were 3G phones and can't make calls. Only the Convoy 4 still works.
The quick answer
- Gusto (all versions): no calls
- Convoy, Convoy 2, Convoy 3: no calls
- Convoy 4: yes, on Verizon
- Model is printed under the battery
Calls after the 3G shutdown
Samsung's Gusto, Gusto 2, Gusto 3 and Convoy 1 to 3 used Verizon's 3G network, which shut down in 2022. The Convoy 4 (2017) supports VoLTE and still works on Verizon.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
Who it still works for
Convoy 4 owners can keep using it. Everyone else needs a new flip phone.
If you're replacing it
If you want to stay with a flip phone, the Nokia 2780 Flip and Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ are current models with VoLTE. A basic phone pairs well with a small plan: Tello and US Mobile both have plans under $10 a month for talk and text.
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
