The Nokia 8110 4G came out in 2018. Mostly no: the "banana phone" never got reliable VoLTE on US carriers, so most units can't make calls here.
The quick answer
- Calls: not reliable on any US carrier
- Software: KaiOS 2.5
- Fine as a collectible or a Wi-Fi novelty
- Don't buy one as a working US phone
Calls after the 3G shutdown
The 8110 4G was mainly sold in Europe and Asia. US carriers didn't certify it for VoLTE, so after the 3G shutdowns it usually connects for data but can't place calls. A few owners report luck on T-Mobile prepaid brands, but it isn't dependable.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
Who it still works for
Collectors and Matrix fans. For a working flip phone, look at the Nokia 2780 Flip.
If you're replacing it
If you want to stay with a flip phone, the Nokia 2780 Flip and Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ are current models with VoLTE. A basic phone pairs well with a small plan: Tello and US Mobile both have plans under $10 a month for talk and text.
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
