Visible and T-Mobile use different networks: Visible runs on Verizon, T-Mobile on its own. One line on Visible costs $25 to $45 a month with taxes included. One line on T-Mobile costs $50 to $100 with AutoPay, plus taxes and a $5.49 fee. For a single person, Visible is much cheaper. T-Mobile pays off if you want streaming perks, a phone deal, several lines or data abroad.
The short answer
| If you... | Pick |
|---|---|
| Want the cheapest unlimited for one line | Visible |
| Get better coverage on T-Mobile | T-Mobile, or Metro or Mint on its network |
| Want Netflix or Hulu included | T-Mobile Experience More or Beyond |
| Want a new phone with big trade-in credits | T-Mobile |
| Need 4 or more lines | Compare both: T-Mobile's per-line price drops |
Plans compared
| Plan | Price, 1 line | Hotspot | Extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visible | $25, taxes included | Unlimited at 5 Mbps | Mexico and Canada talk and text |
| Visible+ | $35, taxes included | Unlimited at 10 Mbps | Premium data, Mexico and Canada roaming |
| Visible+ Pro | $45, taxes included | Unlimited at 15 Mbps | Premium priority, two Global Pass days a month |
| T-Mobile Essentials Saver | $50 + taxes and fees | 3G speeds only | 50GB premium data |
| T-Mobile Experience More | $85 + taxes and fees | 60GB | Netflix, premium data, 5-year price lock |
| T-Mobile Experience Beyond | $100 + taxes and fees | 250GB | Netflix and Hulu, data in 215+ countries |
Network
Visible uses Verizon; T-Mobile has the largest 5G network and is often faster in cities. Which is better depends on where you are. Check both maps for your home and work, or test them. If T-Mobile covers you better but you want a lower price, Mint and Metro use T-Mobile's network for $25 to $30.
What T-Mobile's extra cost buys
- Streaming: Netflix on Experience More, Netflix and Hulu on Beyond.
- Phones: big trade-in and new-line credits, paid over 24 to 36 months.
- Family pricing: the per-line price drops a lot at 3 and 4 lines.
- Travel: Experience Beyond includes 15GB of high-speed data in 215+ countries.
- Stores and in-person support.
One line over a year
Visible+ at $35 is $420 a year. T-Mobile Experience More at $85 plus about $10 in fees and taxes is about $1,140. If you'd pay for Netflix anyway, that covers part of the gap, but the difference is still more than $600 a year for one line.
Three and four lines
| Lines | Visible | Visible+ | T-Mobile Essentials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | $25 | $35 | $50 (Essentials Saver) |
| 3 | $75 | $105 | $90 |
| 4 | $100 | $140 | $100 |
More: T-Mobile family plans.
At three or four lines, T-Mobile Essentials costs about the same as Visible before fees. Add $5.49 per line plus taxes and T-Mobile is about $25 to $35 more at four lines. For a family, the real choice is between networks and perks, not just price.
The phone deal math over 36 months
| T-Mobile Experience More + phone credit | Visible+ + buy the phone | |
|---|---|---|
| Plan, 36 months | About $3,420 ($85 + ~$10 fees and taxes) | $1,260 ($35) |
| Phone ($1,000) | $0 after credits | $1,000 |
| Total | About $3,420 | About $2,260 |
If you'd pay for Netflix anyway, Experience More gets back some of the gap. It's still about $1,000 more over three years for one line.
Travel
| Visible | Visible+ | T-Mobile Experience Beyond | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexico and Canada | Talk and text | Talk, text and roaming | 30GB high-speed data |
| Rest of the world | Global Pass from $5 a day | One Global Pass day included | 15GB high-speed in 215+ countries |
If you travel abroad several times a year, T-Mobile Experience Beyond's included data can be worth more than the price gap. For occasional trips, a travel eSIM or Visible's Global Pass is cheaper.
Switching from T-Mobile to Visible
- Check your phone works on Visible's network and is unlocked (is my phone unlocked?).
- If you're paying off a phone, the remaining balance becomes due when you leave. Pay it off or plan for it (hidden costs of switching).
- Get your account number and number transfer PIN from T-Mobile. Don't cancel T-Mobile yourself: the move cancels it.
- Sign up with Visible and choose to keep your number. Most newer phones can use an eSIM, so you're often live within minutes (how to switch to eSIM).
- Visible uses Verizon's network, so check your phone supports Verizon's bands. Most recent iPhones and Android phones sold in the US do (compatible phones).
Support
T-Mobile has stores, phone support and the T-Life app. Visible is online and chat only.
The bottom line
For one person who doesn't need a phone deal, Visible is the better value. T-Mobile makes sense for families, frequent travelers and people who'd use the perks. If you want T-Mobile's network but not its price, look at Metro or Mint.
