What TravelPass costs

• $12/day per line in most TravelPass countries.
• $6/day per line in Mexico and Canada.
• $0/day in Mexico and Canada if you're on an Unlimited plan — roaming there is already included.
• You're only charged on days you actually use the device abroad. There is no monthly fee and nothing to cancel when you get home.

How much data you get

Each TravelPass session includes 5GB of high-speed data. After that you keep unlimited data at 3G speeds for the rest of the 24-hour session, and Verizon texts you an offer to buy more high-speed data. For most travellers 5GB per session is generous — the throttle is rarely the problem.

How a session actually starts — this is where the surprises come from

A 24-hour TravelPass session begins automatically the first time your device makes or receives a call, sends a text, or uses data in a covered country. You don't opt in per day, and there's no confirmation step.

The five charges people don't expect

1. Background app activity starting a session on a day you meant to stay offline. Turn data roaming off and use Wi-Fi on days you don't need service.
2. Crossing between fee tiers. Two countries inside one 24-hour session is a single charge — but only if they share a daily rate. Go from a $6 country to a $12 country and a new session and new fee start immediately.
3. Dual-SIM and second-number lines. If you use both numbers abroad, each line is charged under its own international plan.
4. Landing in a country TravelPass doesn't cover. You fall through to Pay As You Go rates, billed per minute, per text, and per megabyte — far more expensive than the daily fee.
5. Heavy Mexico and Canada use. If more than 50% of your talk, text, or data over a 60-day period happens there, Verizon can limit or remove service in those countries.

TravelPass doesn't work at sea or in the air

TravelPass covers countries, not cruise ships or aircraft. About twelve miles from land the ship's satellite network takes over and TravelPass stops applying. Verizon sells separate day passes for both, each $20 per line per day — nearly double the TravelPass rate. The Cruise Daily Pass guide covers the allowances and what happens without it.

• Cruise Daily Pass — $20/day per line, charged only on days you use service onboard. Unlimited texts and unlimited calls to the US, with 0.5GB of high-speed data then 3G for the rest of the 24-hour session. You have to turn Wi-Fi off for it to work. Another 0.5GB is $10, and you can buy it more than once in a session. Select cruise lines only.
• In-flight Daily Pass — $20/day per line on participating international flights. Unlimited data, but at 3G speeds throughout. Talk and text are not included: $1.99 a minute, $0.50 per text sent, $0.05 received.

Whether you even need to add it

TravelPass is added automatically on Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome. It cannot be added to Unlimited Ultimate at all — that plan already includes international data, talk, and text, so there's nothing to buy. On other plans you can add it from the international page in My Verizon, or by texting TRAVEL to 4004.

Prepaid works the same way at the same daily rates, though the coverage list is smaller at 140+ countries, and TravelPass isn't available on data-only prepaid plans.

When TravelPass is the wrong choice

The daily structure rewards short trips and punishes long ones. Nine days or more and Verizon's own $100/month International Monthly Plan is cheaper — though it carries only 250 minutes, with overage at $0.25 a minute, and high speed stops after 20GB. Beyond that, the honest comparison is against carriers that don't charge per day at all — T-Mobile's premium plans include international data as a standard feature rather than an add-on, and Google Fi has no day pass concept.
