How to Set Up Voicemail on Android (2026)

Voicemail setup is a carrier feature, not an Android one — which is why the steps differ between Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Here's the universal method plus the per-carrier shortcuts.

Voicemail lives on your carrier's system, not on your phone. That's why a new phone can arrive with voicemail already working, and why a new SIM can leave you with no greeting at all. The universal setup takes about two minutes and works on every Android phone regardless of carrier.

Key takeaways
Voicemail is a carrier service — hold 1 in the Phone app to reach setup on any Android.
If holding 1 fails, set your own phone number as the voicemail setup number in the dialer's advanced settings.
Transcription (visual voicemail) is included on the big three but inconsistent on MVNOs.
After a carrier switch or port, you have to set voicemail up again.

The universal method (works on any carrier)

  1. Open the Phone app and go to the keypad.
  2. Press and hold the 1 key until it dials your voicemail. If nothing happens, dial your own phone number instead.
  3. When prompted, create a PIN — most carriers require 4 to 7 digits and reject sequences like 1234.
  4. Record your name, then record your greeting.
  5. Save when prompted. Call yourself from another phone to confirm it picks up.
If holding 1 does nothing
Your voicemail number isn't provisioned. Open the Phone app, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings > Voicemail > Advanced Settings > Setup number, and enter your own 10-digit phone number. On most carriers that's the correct value.

Visual voicemail by carrier

Visual voicemail transcribes messages so you can read instead of listen. It's a carrier service and each one delivers it differently.

  • Verizon — Visual Voicemail is built into the My Verizon app; basic visual voicemail is included on current plans, with a paid Premium tier for longer storage.
  • AT&T — Visual Voicemail comes through the AT&T Visual Voicemail app or is built into the dialer on many Android phones.
  • T-Mobile and Metro — Voicemail to Text is included; enable it in the T-Life app or by texting the code T-Mobile provides.
  • MVNOs (Mint, Visible, US Mobile, Total, Straight Talk) — most support standard voicemail but not always transcription. Check the carrier's app before assuming you'll get text versions.

Common problems

  • Calls go straight to voicemail — check that Do Not Disturb and call forwarding are both off.
  • Voicemail is full — old messages block new ones on most carriers; delete and empty the trash folder inside the voicemail app.
  • You forgot the PIN — reset it from your carrier's account app or website, not from the phone.
  • You just switched carriers — voicemail must be set up again on the new carrier, even with the same number and phone.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Android voicemail not work after switching carriers? +
Voicemail lives on the carrier's network, so a new carrier means a new voicemail box. Hold 1 in the Phone app and run through setup again — your old greeting and messages don't transfer.
How do I change my voicemail greeting on Android? +
Hold 1 to call voicemail, then follow the menu to greetings — usually option 4 on Verizon and AT&T, option 3 on T-Mobile. You can also change it in the carrier's app if it offers visual voicemail.
Can I get voicemail as text on Android? +
Yes, if your carrier offers transcription. Verizon Visual Voicemail, AT&T Visual Voicemail, and T-Mobile Voicemail to Text all do it at no extra cost on current plans. Many MVNOs don't.
How do I reset my voicemail PIN? +
Through your carrier's account app or website — Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile all let you reset the voicemail PIN online without calling support.
Why do calls go straight to voicemail? +
Usually Do Not Disturb, a call-forwarding setting left over from a previous setup, or no signal at all. Check those three in that order before assuming a carrier problem.
