For the first time, the most expensive iPhone isn't the Pro Max. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, $700 more than the $1,299 iPhone 18 Pro Max, and both run the same A20 Pro chip with 12GB of memory. What you're really choosing between is a phone that opens into a small tablet and a conventional phone with a better camera and battery. Carrier deals change the price gap a lot, so we've worked out what each costs per month too.

Key takeaways
The Duo costs $700 more than the Pro Max at 256GB, with the same A20 Pro chip.
The Pro Max keeps the telephoto, Face ID and longer battery life.
With a $1,200 carrier credit the Pro Max is about $3 a month; the Duo is about $22.

Folded, the Duo is shorter than the Pro Max but about 2.5mm thicker, and its 5.4-inch outer screen is smaller than any current iPhone except the Mini models of the past. That's the most common complaint from people who went back to a Pro Max: the outer screen feels cramped for typing and the inner screen is where the Duo makes sense.

What the extra $700 buys

  • A screen about 50% bigger than the Pro Max's when open, with Split View for two apps side by side.
  • A phone that stands on its own half-open for video calls and hands-free video.
  • A titanium frame and a matte, anti-glare inner screen.

What you give up

  • The telephoto lens. The Pro Max has a 4x optical telephoto; the Duo crops its main sensor for 2x.
  • Face ID. The Duo uses Touch ID in the side button.
  • Battery life on the big screen: 31 hours of video open, against 45 on the Pro Max.
  • App support. Many apps, including Gmail, Google Maps and Chrome, aren't optimized for the Duo's inner screen yet.
  • Durability peace of mind. Apple has confirmed a small number of Duo inner screens are cracking at the hinge, and is replacing them.

Durability and repair costs

A folding screen is the most fragile part of any phone, and the Duo's costs the most to fix. Apple's published prices show the gap:

RepairiPhone DuoiPhone 18 Pro Max
Main screen, no AppleCare+$999 (inner)$379
Outer screen, no AppleCare+$379n/a
Other damage, no AppleCare+Up to $1,499Up to $899
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss$19.99/mo or $199.99/yr$14.99/mo or $149.99/yr
Screen repair with AppleCare+$29 outer, $99 inner$29

If you buy the Duo, budget for AppleCare+. Over three years that's about $600 more on top of the $700 price gap.

What you pay at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon

Carrier credits are a flat amount off, so they cover a bigger share of the cheaper phone. With the top trade-in offer, the Pro Max can be close to free, while the Duo still costs real money each month:

With a $1,000 credit$27.75/mo$8.31/mo
With a $1,200 credit$22.19/mo$2.75/mo

  • AT&T: up to $1,200 off either phone with an eligible trade-in and a new or upgraded line. The full Duo credit needs Premium 2.0 or higher.
  • T-Mobile: up to $1,000 off the Duo on Experience Beyond with any-condition trade-in, and up to $1,200 off the Pro Max at launch. T-Mobile is the only carrier with iPhone Handoff live today ($5 a month), handy if you carry a Duo and a second iPhone.
  • Verizon: up to $1,000 off the Duo with a new Unlimited Ultimate line and trade-in, or about $72 a month for phone and plan on Simplicity with no trade-in. Pro Max offers ran up to $1,200 on myPlan at launch.
  • Xfinity Mobile: up to $1,000 off the Duo with a new Mobile Plus line and trade-in (ends Nov 10), and up to $1,300 off the 18 series at launch.
  • Spectrum Mobile: $600 off either phone on Unlimited Plus Premium, no trade-in listed. That brings the Pro Max to $699 and the Duo to $1,399, spread over 36 months.

Which should you buy?

  • Buy the iPhone Duo if you read, edit or multitask on your phone a lot, would otherwise carry an iPad mini, and are happy paying for AppleCare+.
  • Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if camera zoom and battery life matter most, you want Face ID, or you're taking a big carrier credit: on a $1,200 offer it's close to free.
  • Wait a few weeks on the Duo if you're nervous about the screen reports. Apple hasn't explained the cause yet, and carrier offers are tied to plans, not launch week.

Can you use either on a cheaper carrier?

Yes. Buy unlocked from Apple and both work on any US carrier, including prepaid ones like Visible, Mint and US Mobile. Both are eSIM only in the US, so check your carrier supports eSIM activation first.
