The T-Mobile G1 came out in 2008. No: the first Android phone only supports 2G and 3G, and both are gone in the US.
The quick answer
- Calls: no
- Software: Android 1.6
- Still works offline for some features
- Worth keeping as a collectible
Why it can't connect
The G1 (HTC Dream) used T-Mobile's 2G and 3G networks. T-Mobile shut down 3G in 2022 and 2G in 2025, so it can't connect.
What still works
It still powers on, and the slide-out keyboard and trackball work. Wi-Fi connects, but the browser can't load modern secure sites and the Android Market is long gone.
What it's worth
Boxed, working units with the original charger are the most sought after. Check eBay sold listings for real prices, since asking prices run high.
If you're replacing it
A new moto g 2026 or Galaxy A17 costs little, gets years of updates, and several carriers give them away when you switch. Pair it with a low-cost plan such as Mint Mobile ($15 a month for 6GB on a 12-month term) or Visible ($25 for unlimited, taxes included).
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
