The Light Phone II came out in 2019. Yes: it supports 4G and VoLTE, works on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon postpaid, and still gets software updates from Light.
The quick answer
- Calls: yes on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon postpaid
- Most prepaid brands aren't supported; check Light's list
- Still updated, with optional tools added over time
- The Light Phone III adds a camera and a better screen
Calls after the 3G shutdown
Light lists AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon postpaid as compatible, along with Light's own service, Ting, Mint and US Mobile. Verizon prepaid and Number Share aren't supported. Most other prepaid brands don't work, including Cricket, Metro, Google Fi, Xfinity Mobile, Straight Talk, Tracfone, H2O and Consumer Cellular. Light still adds tools such as maps, a hotspot and a music player.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
Who it still works for
People who want a smartphone-free phone that still gets support.
If you're replacing it
If you want to stay with a flip phone, the Nokia 2780 Flip and Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ are current models with VoLTE. A basic phone pairs well with a small plan: Tello and US Mobile both have plans under $10 a month for talk and text.
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
