The Kyocera DuraXV came out in 2015. It depends on the version: the original 3G DuraXV no longer works, while the DuraXV LTE and DuraXV Extreme do.
The quick answer
- Original DuraXV: no calls
- DuraXV LTE and DuraXV Extreme: yes, on Verizon and AT&T
- Still a tough, loud phone for job sites
- Check the model under the battery
Calls after the 3G shutdown
The first DuraXV (2015) relied on 3G for calls, which is gone. The DuraXV LTE (2017) and DuraXV Extreme (2021) support VoLTE and work on Verizon and AT&T, the carriers that sold them. The model name is printed under the battery.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
Who it still works for
Workers who need a rugged flip phone. The LTE and Extreme versions are still good choices.
If you're replacing it
If you want to stay with a flip phone, the Nokia 2780 Flip and Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ are current models with VoLTE. A basic phone pairs well with a small plan: Tello and US Mobile both have plans under $10 a month for talk and text.
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
