Mint Mobile has four plans that differ only in data: 6GB for $15 a month, 17GB for $20, 23GB for $25 and Unlimited for $30. Those are 12-month prices, paid upfront, plus taxes. Everything else is the same: T-Mobile's network, calling to Mexico, Canada and the UK, and hotspot from your plan data. So the only question is how much data you use. Here's how to find out and which plan fits.
Mint plans side by side
| Plan | 12 months | 6 months | 3 months | Hotspot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6GB | $15/mo ($180) | $20/mo | $25/mo | Uses plan data |
| 17GB | $20/mo ($240) | $25/mo | $35/mo | Uses plan data |
| 23GB | $25/mo ($300) | $35/mo | $45/mo | Uses plan data |
| Unlimited | $30/mo ($360) | $35/mo | $40/mo | Up to 20GB high-speed |

Check how much data you use
Look at your last three months, not one. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, and reset the statistics on your billing date. On Android, go to Settings, then Network, then Data usage. Your current carrier's app or bill also shows it. Pick the plan above your highest month.
What each plan size is good for
| Plan | Good fit if you... |
|---|---|
| 6GB | Are on Wi-Fi most of the day and use data for maps, messages, email and music |
| 17GB | Watch some video or use social apps away from Wi-Fi, or hotspot now and then |
| 23GB | Stream regularly on the go, but not every day |
| Unlimited | Stream daily, have no home internet, or use hotspot for work |
Rough guide: an hour of standard-quality video is about 1GB, an hour of HD video about 3GB, and an hour of music about 0.1GB. Maps and messaging use very little.
| Daily habit (away from Wi-Fi) | About per month |
|---|---|
| Maps, messages and email | 1–2GB |
| 1 hour of music a day | 3GB |
| 1 hour of social media a day | Around 5–10GB, more with video |
| 1 hour of standard video a day | 30GB |
| 1 hour of HD video a day | 90GB |

If daily video away from Wi-Fi is part of your routine, Unlimited is the only plan that fits. Turning down video quality in your apps can halve what you use.
What happens when you run out
On the 6GB, 17GB and 23GB plans, data slows down after your allowance until your next month starts. You can buy more data in the Mint app. On Unlimited, you get 50GB of premium data, then you may be slowed when the network is busy.
The best value per plan
The $5 steps make the bigger plans good value. Going from 23GB to Unlimited costs $5 a month, so if you're near 20GB, get Unlimited. If you use under 6GB, the 6GB plan costs $60 a year less than 17GB. Short terms cost more: on 3 months, Unlimited is $40 and 6GB is $25, so it's worth committing to 12 months once you know Mint covers you.
6GB for $15, 17GB for $20, 23GB for $25 or Unlimited for $30 a month on 12 months, plus taxes. New customers get the 12-month price for their first 3 months. Runs on T-Mobile's network.

Mint vs other carriers
For unlimited data, Visible and Metro charge $25 with taxes included. Mint wins on fast hotspot data and on small plans: $15 for 6GB is hard to beat. See Mint vs Visible and Mint vs Metro.
Hotspot on the smaller plans
On 6GB, 17GB and 23GB, hotspot comes out of your plan data. A couple of hours of laptop work can use several GB, so if you hotspot regularly, Unlimited's separate 20GB is the safer pick.
Families and two lines
Each Mint line has its own plan, so you can mix sizes: one Unlimited and one 6GB line costs $45 a month on 12-month terms. Taxes and fees are extra, usually a few dollars per line.
Switching from your carrier to Mint
- Check your phone works on Mint's network and is unlocked (is my phone unlocked?).
- If you're paying off a phone, the remaining balance becomes due when you leave. Pay it off or plan for it (hidden costs of switching).
- Get your account number and number transfer PIN from your carrier. Don't cancel your carrier yourself: the move cancels it.
- Sign up with Mint and choose to keep your number. Most newer phones can use an eSIM, so you're often live within minutes (how to switch to eSIM).
- Mint uses T-Mobile's network. Most unlocked phones work; check yours on Mint's site. Already on Mint and want to leave? See Mint unlock requirements.
The bottom line
Check your data use first. Under 6GB, get the $15 plan. Most other people should get 17GB or Unlimited: 23GB is only $5 less than Unlimited.
