Metro by T-Mobile Unlock Requirements

One rule, one number, and nothing about what you paid. Metro's policy is also looser than its own parent company's prepaid policy, which is not what most people would guess.

One rule, one number: 365 days from activation, with no payment condition attached.

Metro by T-Mobile has the simplest unlock policy of any carrier we track. There is one waiting period, it applies to everyone, and payment status is not part of it. That last detail is unusual — most carriers make you settle the device balance first — and it makes Metro's policy slightly more generous than T-Mobile's own prepaid rules, despite Metro being a T-Mobile brand.

Key takeaways
One rule: 365 days since the device activation date. No payment condition of any kind.
Metro unlocks eligible devices remotely within two business days — nothing to request.
Looser than T-Mobile prepaid, which caps unlocks at two per line per year.
The unlock must be applied over the mobile network, not Wi-Fi, and a rooted phone will not run the unlock app.
Deployed military in good standing can unlock early with deployment papers — call 888-863-8768.

The requirements

  • The device must have been purchased from Metro by T-Mobile.
  • The device must not be reported as lost, stolen or blocked.
  • 365 days must have passed since the device's activation date.

That is the complete list. There is no payment condition, no refill threshold, and no cap on how many phones you can unlock.

Looser than T-Mobile prepaid
T-Mobile prepaid also requires 365 days, but adds a two-unlocks-per-line-per-year cap. Metro has neither that cap nor any payment requirement — the same parent company, a simpler policy.

Metro unlocks it for you

Once a device becomes eligible, Metro remotely unlocks it within two business days. There is nothing to submit. Where a handset cannot be unlocked remotely, Metro sends a notification to the device within two business days of eligibility, explaining the steps to finish it manually.

If you are doing it by hand

Two conditions cause most of the failures people report, and neither is obvious:

  • The phone must be connected to the mobile network — including while roaming — not Wi-Fi. If the unlock fails to apply, disconnect from Wi-Fi and try again.
  • A rooted device will not run the unlock application at all. There is no workaround short of restoring the stock software.

Other errors are more mundane: an unstable signal interrupts the data transfer, and a phone low on free storage will fail to process the request. Restarting the handset resolves most of them.

How to tell whether your phone is actually locked

Worth checking first — a phone bought secondhand or brought from elsewhere may never have been locked at all.

  • iPhone — Settings, then General, then About. Scroll to Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means unlocked; "SIM locked" means locked.
  • Samsung released before September 2025 — Settings, About phone, Software information, then Service provider software version.
  • Samsung released after September 2025 — Settings, Connections, More connection settings, then Network lock status.
  • Any phone — insert a SIM from another carrier. If it connects, the phone is unlocked. This is the only test that cannot be misread.

Military deployment

Deployed military personnel who are customers in good standing can have a device unlocked on provision of deployment papers, without waiting out the 365 days. Metro asks that you call 888-863-8768 with the paperwork.

What Metro cannot unlock

A phone Metro did not sell. If you brought your own device to Metro, or bought it from another carrier or retailer, Metro has no ability to unlock it — you need whoever sold it to you. That is worth establishing before you spend time on a request.

Once it is unlocked

An unlocked phone is worth more secondhand and removes the main reason people stay on a plan they have outgrown. Two things before you move: check the handset supports the bands your new carrier uses, because unlocked does not mean fully compatible, and re-pick the plan rather than porting the old one across.

Before you switch

A year on Metro is long enough for your usage to have changed. Seven questions and you will know which tier to shop.

Frequently asked questions

How long before Metro unlocks my phone? +
365 days from the device's activation date. Metro then unlocks it remotely within two business days, with nothing for you to submit.
Do I need to pay off my Metro phone to unlock it? +
No. Metro's eligibility criteria do not mention payment status at all — only the 365 days, that the device came from Metro, and that it is not reported lost, stolen or blocked.
Why does my Metro unlock keep failing? +
The two most common causes are being on Wi-Fi instead of the mobile network, and a rooted device — rooting disables the unlock application entirely. Reconnect to cellular, restart the phone, and make sure it has free storage.
Can Metro unlock a phone I brought from another carrier? +
No. Metro can only unlock devices it sold. For anything else you need the carrier, manufacturer or retailer that sold it to you.
Is Metro's policy the same as T-Mobile's? +
No, and Metro's is simpler. Both require 365 days on prepaid, but T-Mobile also caps unlocks at two per line per 12 months and offers a refill-based shortcut. Metro has one flat rule.
Does Metro charge to unlock a phone? +
No. Devices meeting the criteria are unlocked free of charge.
