How to Improve Mobile Signal Strength

Work through it in order of cost: free settings changes, then Wi-Fi calling, then a booster — and know when the honest answer is that you're on the wrong network.

Weak signal has three possible causes: your phone, your building, or your carrier. The fixes get more expensive in that order, so work through them in order — and be willing to reach the conclusion that no fix beats switching networks.

Free fixes, in order

  1. Toggle airplane mode on and off. This forces the phone to re-scan and reselect the strongest tower instead of clinging to a weak one.
  2. Restart the phone. Same effect, more thorough.
  3. Remove a thick metal or magnetic case. Metal attenuates signal measurably.
  4. Move toward a window or outside. Modern low-emissivity glass and concrete are the biggest indoor obstacles.
  5. Check for a carrier settings update (iPhone: Settings > General > About) and install any pending system update.
  6. Reset network settings as a last free step — it clears a corrupted carrier profile, at the cost of re-entering Wi-Fi passwords.

Turn on Wi-Fi calling

This is the single most effective fix for poor indoor coverage, and it's free on every major carrier. Calls and texts route over your home internet instead of the cellular network, so tower signal stops mattering indoors. Enable it in Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling on iPhone, or Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Wi-Fi calling on Android.

Bars are a bad metric
Bars aren't standardized between manufacturers. For a real reading, use dBm: on iPhone, Field Test mode (dial *3001#12345#*); on Android, Settings > About phone > SIM status. Above −85 dBm is strong, −86 to −100 is workable, and below −110 is where calls start dropping.

When hardware is justified

  • A signal booster amplifies an existing weak outdoor signal — it can't create one. If you get nothing outside the building, a booster won't help.
  • Consumer boosters cost roughly $200 to $600 and must be FCC-certified; uncertified amplifiers can interfere with the network and are illegal to operate.
  • A femtocell or network extender uses your home internet to create a small cellular cell. Availability varies by carrier and it's worth asking support before buying anything.
  • For rural properties, an outdoor directional antenna aimed at the nearest tower does more than an indoor booster.

The fix nobody sells you

If signal is bad everywhere you spend time, the problem is network choice. Verizon is generally strongest rurally, T-Mobile in cities, AT&T across the South and along highways. Free trials make this testable rather than theoretical — and US Mobile lets you pick Verizon or T-Mobile at signup, which sidesteps the guess entirely.
