Google Fi Plans

Four plans built around travel and device connectivity. Every tier is unlimited on paper, and every tier drops to 256 kbps once you pass its high-speed allowance — the number that actually separates them.

Google Fi's differentiator is international. The Premium tier includes high-speed data in 200+ destinations, free calls to 50+ countries and connectivity for tablets and laptops on the same plan — a package no US carrier matches at the price.

The tiers are easiest to read as data allowances rather than as unlimited plans. Essentials gives 30GB, Standard 50GB and Premium 100GB, and all three continue at 256 kbps afterwards rather than cutting off. Hotspot counts against the same allowance, so the headline hotspot figures are a ceiling, not an addition.

What separates the tiers

Every unlimited tier has the same network and the same 256 kbps floor. These four columns are the entire difference between them.

Hotspot tethering counts towards your monthly high-speed data allowance rather than being additional. International data also draws from the same pool. Prices exclude taxes and government fees.

What it really costs

Read the allowance, not the word unlimited. Essentials is 30GB, Standard 50GB and Premium 100GB, after which everything runs at 256 kbps — usable for messaging and little else.

Hotspot is not additive. Google Fi states that tethering counts towards your monthly high-speed data usage, so Premium's 50GB hotspot comes out of its 100GB, not on top. The same applies to international data.

The Flexible plan is the one people miscalculate. $20 plus $10 per gigabyte means 3GB costs $50 — the same as Standard, which includes 50GB. It only makes sense below about 1.5GB a month.

Perks are Premium-only and worth real money: 100GB of Google One and six months of YouTube Premium, which renews at $15.99/mo unless cancelled. Factor the renewal in rather than treating it as permanent.

Google Fi is a good fit if…

✓You want one plan covering a phone, a smartwatch, a tablet and a laptop.
✓You want Google Account security, VPN by Google and spam blocking built in rather than bolted on.
✓You want 24/7 support from people rather than an app-only carrier.
✓You barely use data at all — Flexible at $20 plus usage can be genuinely cheap under about 1.5GB.

Look elsewhere if…

−You never leave the country — you're paying for international infrastructure you won't touch.
−You want all-in pricing; taxes and government fees are extra on every plan.
−You use more than 100GB, which is where even Premium drops to 256 kbps.
−You watch a lot of video on cellular — Fi notes video may stream at 480p.
−You want a cheap tethering plan; Essentials has no hotspot at all.
