You pay the activation fee and first month up front. Cancel within 30 days with under 500MB used, and Consumer Cellular refunds the service charge and activation fee. Third-party charges and device upgrade fees are NOT refunded. Ordered a phone? You have 30 days to return it with a prepaid label. So it’s not “try free and decide” — it’s “pay, and get your money back if you cancel quickly enough.”
The big limit: 500MB
500MB is a few hours of music streaming or an hour or two of SD video — easy to blow through if you stress-test with streaming and navigation. Plan accordingly: talk and text are unlimited and don’t count; test calls and signal at your usual places; keep data-heavy tasks on Wi-Fi. It’s a “does calling work where I live” test, not a network stress test.
AARP and USAA: 45 days
Members get 45 days instead of 30 (500MB cap still applies). AARP membership is inexpensive and also unlocks a 5% monthly discount — for 50+ shoppers, joining first is often worthwhile.
