It depends: 3G iPads can't connect, but older 4G LTE iPads still get data.
The quick answer
- iPad (original) and iPad 2: no cellular
- iPad 3 and newer LTE models: data may work
- Old iPadOS versions limit apps
- Add it as a tablet line or data-only plan
How it works now
iPads don't make phone calls, so VoLTE doesn't matter. The original iPad and iPad 2 are 3G only and can't connect. LTE models, starting with the iPad 3rd generation and iPad Air, can still get data if the carrier supports their bands. The software is the bigger limit: the iPad Air stopped at iPadOS 12.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
Who it still works for
An LTE iPad can still be a car or travel tablet. For anything older, Wi-Fi only.
If you're replacing it
A new moto g 2026 or Galaxy A17 costs little, gets years of updates, and several carriers give them away when you switch. Pair it with a low-cost plan such as Mint Mobile ($15 a month for 6GB on a 12-month term) or Visible ($25 for unlimited, taxes included).
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
