The Essential Phone (PH-1) came out in 2017. Maybe: it supports VoLTE and works on T-Mobile in many cases, but software stopped at Android 10.
The quick answer
- Calls: depends on the carrier; check the IMEI
- Software: Android 10
- Still works offline for some features
- Worth keeping as a collectible
Calls after the 3G shutdown
The PH-1 was sold unlocked and through Sprint. It supports VoLTE and generally works on T-Mobile and its prepaid brands. AT&T and Verizon support is spotty. Essential closed in 2020, so there are no more updates.
What still works
Apps still install from Google Play, though some banking apps may stop supporting Android 10.
What it's worth
A cult favorite, but values are modest.
How to check yours
- Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
- Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
- If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.
If you're replacing it
A new moto g 2026 or Galaxy A17 costs little, gets years of updates, and several carriers give them away when you switch. Pair it with a low-cost plan such as Mint Mobile ($15 a month for 6GB on a 12-month term) or Visible ($25 for unlimited, taxes included).
Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
