Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 Mobile in December 2019, and the Store has since stopped working for most apps. Most Lumia phones also struggle on today's US networks.

Key takeaways
Windows 10 Mobile support ended in December 2019.
Most apps, and the Store, no longer work.
Most Lumias aren't approved for VoLTE, so can't make calls.
Still collectible, and the Lumia 1020 camera holds up.

The quick answer

  • Calls: unlikely on most US carriers; check the IMEI
  • Apps: the Store and most apps no longer work
  • Security: no updates since 2019
  • Best use now: a collectible or offline camera (the Lumia 1020's is still good)

Calls after the 3G shutdown

After the 3G shutdown, phones need VoLTE approved by the carrier. Few Lumia models were approved for VoLTE on US carriers, so most can't make calls. A handful of carrier models had VoLTE on their original network; check the IMEI if you want to try.

How to check yours

  1. Find the IMEI: dial *#06#, or look in the phone's settings or under the battery.
  2. Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker. Every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one.
  3. If it isn't supported, it's usually missing approval for VoLTE (calls over 4G), which every US phone now needs.

The software limit: Windows 10 Mobile

Windows 10 Mobile stopped getting updates in December 2019. Microsoft's Store for phones has shut down for most purposes, and apps like WhatsApp and banking apps no longer run. Some built-in features still work offline.

Who it still works for

Collectors, and photographers who still like the Lumia 1020's 41MP camera as an offline device.

If you're replacing it

A new moto g 2026 or Galaxy A17 costs little, gets years of updates, and several carriers give them away when you switch. Pair it with a low-cost plan such as Mint Mobile ($15 a month for 6GB on a 12-month term) or Visible ($25 for unlimited, taxes included).

Free phones when you switch

Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
