The Galaxy Note 8 came out in 2017. It usually still works as a phone, and the S Pen still works, but it's stuck on Android 9 with no security updates.

Key takeaways
Most Galaxy Note 8s still make calls: it supports VoLTE.
The S Pen still works.
It's stuck on Android 9 with no security updates.
Check the IMEI before switching carriers.

The quick answer

  • Calls: usually yes; check the IMEI
  • S Pen: still works
  • Software: stuck on Android 9, no security updates
  • Fine as a backup or note-taking device

Calls after the 3G shutdown

The Note 8 supports VoLTE, and US carrier and unlocked versions are generally approved. International models are the ones to check before you switch carriers.

The model number matters
Samsung sold different versions of each Galaxy for each carrier, plus unlocked and international versions. A carrier version is far more likely to be approved for VoLTE on that carrier than an import. Check the model number in Settings > About phone.

How to check yours

  1. Find the IMEI: dial *#06# or look in Settings > About phone.
  2. Enter it in your carrier's compatibility checker (every major carrier and most prepaid brands have one).
  3. If it says the phone isn't supported, it usually means no VoLTE approval for that model. A different version of the same phone may still work.

The software limit: Android 9

The Note 8 stops at Android 9 and no longer gets security updates. Expect banking and payment apps to drop support first.

Who it still works for

People who want the S Pen for notes and sketches without paying for a new Note-style phone. As a daily phone, a newer budget model will be faster and safer.

If you're replacing it

A new Galaxy A17 or moto g 2026 costs far less than an old flagship did, gets years of updates, and several carriers give them away when you switch. Pair it with a low-cost plan such as Mint Mobile ($15 a month for 6GB on a 12-month term) or Visible ($25 for unlimited, taxes included).

Free phones when you switch

Current offers from Metro, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T and Xfinity.
