Every unlimited plan claims unlimited data. Almost none of them mean unlimited tethering. The hotspot allowance is the number that separates a plan you can work from and one that quits on you at 15GB — so that's what we've ranked here, alongside what happens to your phone data when the network is busy.
1. Visible+ — best overall for hotspot
$35/mo with taxes and fees included, on Verizon's network including Ultra Wideband. Unlimited premium data that isn't deprioritized, and unlimited hotspot at up to 10 Mbps — no cap to run into. 10 Mbps handles video calls, email, and normal laptop work comfortably; it isn't for 4K streaming or large file transfers.
- Hotspot: unlimited, up to 10 Mbps
- Phone data: unlimited premium, not deprioritized
- Price is all-in — $35 is the bill
- Step up to Visible+ Pro at $45/mo for hotspot at up to 15 Mbps and premium network priority
2. US Mobile Unlimited Premium — best high-speed allowance
$44/mo, or $32.50/mo on annual prepay, with taxes included. 50GB of high-speed hotspot then unlimited at slower speeds, and you choose Verizon or T-Mobile at signup. If you need real speed while tethering rather than just a connection, this beats Visible+.
- Hotspot: 50GB high-speed, then unlimited slower
- Phone data: truly unlimited premium
- Choice of network — useful if coverage is the deciding factor
3. Cricket Supreme Unlimited — best on AT&T
$60/mo ($55 effective with AutoPay from month two), taxes included. 50GB of high-speed hotspot, then 125 Kbps. The distinguishing feature is QCI 8 priority data — it doesn't slow during congestion, which almost no AT&T-network alternative can say.
- Hotspot: 50GB high-speed, then 125 Kbps
- Phone data: unlimited priority, no congestion slowdown
- HBO Max with Ads and 150GB cloud storage included
- Four lines at $130/mo total
4. Verizon Unlimited Ultimate — best premium postpaid
$95/mo single line plus taxes. 60GB of high-speed hotspot and truly unlimited phone data at Verizon's highest priority. Expensive for one line, and only worth it if you need postpaid priority in genuinely congested places — otherwise Visible+ gives you the same network for $60 less.
- Hotspot: 60GB high-speed, then reduced
- Phone data: truly unlimited, never deprioritized
- Taxes added on top of the plan price
5. T-Mobile Experience Beyond — best for travel
About $100/mo with taxes included. 50GB high-speed hotspot and 250GB of priority phone data, plus free 5G data in 215+ countries at the highest speeds in T-Mobile's lineup. The hotspot allowance is matched elsewhere for less; the international data isn't.
- Hotspot: 50GB high-speed
- Phone data: 250GB priority before deprioritization
- Free 5G data in 215+ countries
The cheapest way to tether
Total MAX 5G BYO is $25/mo with AutoPay and includes unlimited hotspot at 5 Mbps on Verizon's network with premium phone data. Half Visible+'s speed cap, but $10 cheaper and still uncapped — the value pick if your tethering is email, documents, and browsing rather than calls and video.
Do you need a hotspot device instead?
A dedicated hotspot device makes sense above roughly five connected devices, all-day use, or when you need an Ethernet port or a backup for home internet. Below that, a phone plan with a real hotspot allowance is cheaper and simpler, since the device needs its own data plan on top of its purchase price.
