Cellular internet — usually sold as 5G home internet — replaces the cable or phone line running into your house with a radio link to a nearby cell tower. You get a gateway, which is a modem and Wi-Fi router in one box, you put it near a window, and it connects to the same network your phone uses. There is no technician, no line to install, and often no contract. Whether that is a bargain or a compromise depends almost entirely on your address.
How it differs from the internet you have now
Cable and fiber are wired: a physical line runs to your home and the capacity on it is largely yours. Cellular internet is shared radio capacity, which is why it can be sold cheaply and why its performance varies in ways a wired line does not.

The install difference is not a small thing. A self-installed gateway means no appointment window, no technician, and no wiring work — and if it does not perform, returning a box is far easier than unwinding an installation.
Why it costs less, and what you give up
Carriers built enormous 5G capacity for phones, and outside busy hours much of it sits unused. Home internet monetises that spare capacity, which is why it is priced well below cable and why the price is usually flat rather than promotional.
The practical consequences are narrower than that sounds. Streaming, browsing, video calls and normal work traffic are comfortable at the speeds these services deliver. What suffers is the top end and the consistency — the gap between a good hour and a bad one is wider than on a wired line.
Availability is decided by your address, not your area
This is the part that confuses people most. Carriers sell 5G home internet based on spare capacity at the specific tower serving your address, so it can be available at one house and unavailable next door. A neighbour’s good experience is weak evidence, and so is a coverage map — the only reliable check is entering your own address on the carrier’s site.
It also means availability can change. Capacity that exists today may be withdrawn as a tower fills up, which is why carriers can stop accepting new customers in an area without any change to their coverage claims.
Who it works for
- Anyone whose cable bill has climbed after a promotional year — flat pricing is the clearest win here.
- Renters and people who move often, since there is nothing to install and nothing to uninstall.
- Households with one cable provider and no fiber, where this is the only real competition.
- Second homes and seasonal use, where a self-install box you can pause beats a wired account.
Who should stay wired
- Competitive gamers — the latency is fine for most things but not the lowest available.
- Anyone uploading large files routinely; upload is where these services are weakest.
- Homes that cannot tolerate a bad evening — if your work depends on a stable video call at 8pm, deprioritization is a real risk.
- Anyone who already has affordable fiber, which beats cellular internet on every axis except price flexibility.
What to check before you sign
- Confirm availability at your exact address, not your ZIP code.
- Ask whether the quoted price is flat or promotional, and whether equipment is included.
- Check the return window — it is your real trial period, and self-install makes using it easy.
- Look for a bundle discount if you have a phone line with the same carrier; these are often substantial.
- Test in the evening during the return window, not just the day it arrives.
