You don't need to cancel an iPhone Duo order because of the screen-cracking reports: Apple says only a small number of units are affected, that problems tend to show up soon after use, and that it replaces affected phones for free. If you'd rather not risk it, cancel before the phone ships, or return it within the window: 14 days at Apple, AT&T and T-Mobile stores, 20 days for T-Mobile online orders, and 30 days at Verizon. Returning to a carrier can cost a restocking fee of $50 to $75.
Keep it, cancel it, or return it?
| Your situation | What we'd do |
|---|---|
| Ordered, not shipped yet | Keep the order unless you've gone off the phone. Cancelling is free, but restocks are slow and you'd lose your place. |
| Arrived, working fine | Keep it and use the fold a lot in the first days. If a problem appears, you're still inside the return window. |
| Arrived, crunching sound or lines on the screen | Contact AppleCare for a free replacement, or return it if you're inside the window and want out. |
| You bought it mainly to try a foldable | Return it before the window closes if it isn't for you. A refund is cleaner than a replacement you don't want. |
How to cancel before it ships
- Apple: open your order in Order Status on apple.com or the Apple Store app and cancel any item that hasn't shipped.
- Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile: cancel online orders in the carrier's app or account page, or call, before the order ships. If it has shipped, treat it as a return.
- Check that your refund arrives, and that any trade-in kit or trade-in offer is cancelled too.
Return windows and fees
| Where you bought it | Return window | Restocking fee |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon | 30 days | $50 plus tax (not in Hawaii) |
| AT&T | 14 days | Up to $55; none on an Apple device returned unopened |
| T-Mobile store | 14 days | $75 for phones $600 and up |
| T-Mobile online or by phone | 20 days from shipping | $75 for phones $600 and up |
| Apple | 14 days | None |
Ask for the restocking fee to be waived if the phone is defective; carriers often agree, and some states limit the fee. More in our guide to carrier restocking fees.
What a return does to your deal
- Carrier promo credits and trade-in credits are cancelled. If you traded in a phone, ask what happens to it before you return the Duo.
- If you switched carriers to get the deal, returning the phone doesn't undo the switch; your new line stays open until you cancel it.
- An Apple trade-in credit is reversed on a return; check Apple's return terms for how the traded-in phone is handled.
If you keep it: protect yourself
- Open and close it often in the first days; Apple says affected phones show the defect early.
- Listen for a crunch and look for lines along the fold.
- Put your return deadline in your calendar.
- Consider AppleCare+: accidental damage to the inner screen is $99 to fix with it and $999 without. The cracking defect itself is replaced free either way.
