The eligibility rule comes first. Both plans require an active Xfinity Internet account, so the real comparison isn't Xfinity Mobile against other carriers. It's whether adding a line to the cable bill beats buying a standalone plan elsewhere.
For Xfinity households it usually does. Select is free for twelve months on a new line and $30 after, on Verizon's network. Very little else gets you a year of unlimited service for nothing.
The upgrade is unusually well-priced. Plus at $45 delivers 100GB of priority data and a 30GB hotspot: the kind of allowance Verizon charges $80–95 for on its own postpaid tiers, and more hotspot than most Verizon MVNOs offer at any price.
Two caveats. Taxes and fees are extra on both tiers, and Select's hotspot at 600 Kbps is slow enough that it shouldn't count as tethering. If you tether at all, that's the reason to take Plus.

Verizon's 5G and 4G LTE network. The Plus tier carries QCI 8 priority, which is why its 100GB priority allowance holds up better in congestion than most Verizon MVNOs.
Is Xfinity Mobile's hotspot any good?+
On Plus, yes: 30GB at high speed is more than most Verizon MVNOs include. On Select it's unlimited but capped at 600 Kbps, which is 3G-era speed and not practical for laptop work.
Is Select really free for a year?+
On a new line, yes — twelve months at no charge, then $30/mo. You still need Xfinity Internet, and taxes and fees apply.
