Who qualifies

Apple states the extension applies to existing iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 users who activated their device in a country that supports Apple's satellite features, before midnight PT on September 9. There is nothing to claim and no setting to change. If your activation predates that cutoff, you have the extra year; if it does not, you are on the standard two years from activation.

The carrier part

This is not entirely carrier-independent. Apple notes that some satellite features require a carrier plan, and that SMS messaging via satellite is available on supported carriers. That matters most if you are on a smaller MVNO: emergency SOS is the baseline, but satellite texting may not be enabled on your account even though your handset supports it. Confirm with your carrier rather than assuming the phone decides.

Roadside Assistance via satellite is free to summon but not free to use. Apple states the fees are set by the roadside assistance provider and vary by location and the type of help sent.

Why this is worth knowing

Satellite is the one feature that makes a cheap plan on a weak network survivable. If you are on an MVNO whose towers thin out where you drive, the satellite layer is the floor beneath the coverage gap — and for most existing iPhone owners it is now free for a further twelve months.

What Apple has not published is what happens after the free period ends. There is no announced price for continuing satellite service once the term expires on any iPhone, which means the eventual cost is still an open question rather than a known line item.
