Walmart Phone Plans: The Whole Shelf, Ranked
Walmart's prepaid aisle looks like a competitive market and mostly isn't. Walmart Family Mobile, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Tracfone, Simple Mobile and SafeLink all belong to Verizon's prepaid portfolio — six brands, one owner, and largely one network underneath.
How we judged these plans ▾
We treat Walmart as a shelf rather than a carrier, because that is what it is. The question is not whether to buy 'a Walmart plan' — there is no such thing as a single one — but which of the brands stocked there is worth your money, and whether the aisle itself is costing you.
The first job on this page was establishing ownership, because it changes the whole comparison. Six of the brands stocked at Walmart — Walmart Family Mobile, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Tracfone, Simple Mobile and SafeLink — belong to Verizon's prepaid portfolio, alongside Visible and Verizon Prepaid. Straight Talk and Total Wireless carry the same line in their own footers: Verizon Value, Inc., a Verizon company. Walmart Family Mobile's Lifeline service is provided by TracFone Wireless, Inc, from the same group.
The practical consequence: comparing these brands on coverage is close to pointless. They run on the same network with the same deprioritization behind Verizon's own postpaid customers during congestion. So we rank on price per gigabyte, what each tier actually bundles, and the cost of the retail channel itself.
One difference does most of the work, and it is not on any shelf tag: whether taxes and fees are included. Total Wireless quotes tax-inclusive prices — its FCC labels list government taxes as included — while Walmart Family Mobile and Straight Talk both add them on top. That is worth several dollars a line a month and it inverts more than one comparison on this page, so every figure below says which kind it is.
We flag the 2G cliff wherever it applies. Several of the cheaper tiers advertise unlimited data and mean unlimited talk and text with a small high-speed allowance, after which the connection is nominally alive and practically unusable. That is the single most common misread on this shelf.
Straight Talk Bronze 10 GB, at $35/mo
Bronze is the point on Walmart's shelf where you stop paying a premium for the aisle: 10GB of high-speed data on Verizon's network for $35, rather than the 2G cliff the cheapest Family Mobile tiers fall off. Above it the ladder runs Silver Unlimited at $45, Gold at $55 with 15GB of hotspot and calling to 60+ countries, and Platinum at $65 with 20GB, 100GB of cloud storage and a Walmart+ membership.
The catch: Bronze carries none of the perks — no hotspot allowance, no international calling. Straight Talk's Auto Pay discount also only covers the first three months, unlike Walmart Family Mobile's, which is ongoing.

The questions that decide it, in the order worth asking them.
This is the real question the shelf answers. If you want to pay cash, top up at a register, or have a person hand you a SIM, the in-store brands are worth their premium. If you are comfortable activating online, the same corporate parent will sell you unlimited data on Verizon for $20 to $25 — Total MAX 5G BYO or Visible — which is less than several in-store tiers charge for 4 to 8GB.
Only on Total Wireless, whose FCC labels list government taxes as included and which guarantees the rate for five years. Walmart Family Mobile and Straight Talk both add taxes and fees on top of the shelf price, so add several dollars a line before comparing them against a tax-inclusive plan.
Check your current bill. Under 4GB: Walmart Family Mobile's entry tier at $19.88 is the cheapest thing here. 4-20GB: the middle Family Mobile tiers or Straight Talk Bronze. Above that, or if you stream on cellular, go to a flat unlimited plan — paying per tier stops making sense quickly.
On several of the cheaper tiers, speeds drop to 2G for the rest of the cycle. That is not 'slower' in any useful sense — it will not carry modern apps. If your usage is anywhere near your allowance, the tier above is cheaper than the frustration.
Straight Talk's four-line family rate at $25 a line is the best multi-line price on the shelf. At one or two lines it is not competitive, and Total Wireless BYO or Visible will beat it.
This one catches people out. Walmart Family Mobile's Auto Pay discount is worth about a dollar a month on the middle tiers and $2.50 on the unlimited plan — but it is available on single-line accounts only. Add a second line at $19.88 and the Auto Pay saving disappears from the account entirely.
Then this is probably the whole answer. Walmart associates get 33.34% off the monthly recurring charges on a Walmart Family Mobile plan, and it applies to every line on the account rather than just the primary one. Four lines at $19.88 comes to $79.52, which the discount takes to about $53 — roughly $13 a line, which nothing else on or off this shelf competes with. It is applied before taxes and fees, takes up to two billing cycles to appear, and is limited to one account per associate.
