T-Mobile's Student Discount and the Condition Attached

Three T-Mobile tiers carry a student rate, taking $5 off the entry plan and $5 off each Experience tier. Keeping the rate depends on verifying enrollment inside 45 days and again whenever T-Mobile asks.

T-Mobile runs student pricing as a parallel ladder to its standard plans.

T-Mobile prices three of its plans separately for students. Essentials Saver with Student Savings is $30 a month for one line, Experience More is $65, and Experience Beyond is $80 — each $5 below the standard single-line rate, with AutoPay applied. The discount is straightforward. The condition attached to it is the part worth reading first, because failing it costs more than the discount is worth.

Key takeaways
Student rates: Essentials Saver $30, Experience More $65, Experience Beyond $80 — one line, with AutoPay.
You must verify enrollment within 45 days of activating and re-verify whenever T-Mobile requests it.
Fail to verify and the price rises by up to $20 per line — four times the discount.
A phone line plus 5G Home Internet bundles at $30 each, $60 a month total.
Only the Experience tiers carry the 5-year price guarantee; Essentials Saver does not.

The three student rates

PlanStandardStudentWhat you get
Essentials Saver w/ Student Savings$35$30Unlimited talk and text, 50GB premium data, tethering at 3G speeds
Experience More w/ Student Savings$70$65Unlimited premium data, 60GB hotspot, 4K streaming, Netflix on us, 15GB in Canada and Mexico
Experience Beyond w/ Student Savings$85$80Everything in More plus T-Satellite, Hulu on us, unlimited hotspot, 30GB Canada and Mexico, 15GB in 215+ countries, $5 watch and tablet lines

All prices are for a single line with AutoPay and exclude taxes and fees. Apple TV is $3 a month on both Experience tiers rather than included.

The 45-day rule

T-Mobile requires the account holder to verify student status within 45 days of activation, to keep a student line active, and to re-verify when asked. If verification lapses, the line reverts to standard pricing — T-Mobile's terms describe an increase of up to $20 per line per month.

The penalty is larger than the discount
The student rate saves $5 a month. Losing it costs up to $20 a month, because the reversion is not simply to the standard student-eligible price. Verify on day one rather than day forty.

What counts as proof

  • Student ID, including digital student IDs in many cases
  • Enrollment letter or certification from your school's registrar
  • Acceptance letter or email
  • Current class schedule, or a future semester's schedule
  • Official or unofficial transcript, or a student record
  • Form I-20 or an F-1 student visa for international students

The home internet bundle

T-Mobile sells a student phone line alongside 5G Home Internet at $30 each, $60 a month total with AutoPay before taxes and fees. For a shared house that is a competitive figure against most campus-area broadband, and the internet side has no annual contract or equipment fee.

Whether the student rate is the right reason to choose T-Mobile

Five dollars is not much. Essentials Saver at $30 is a reasonable single-line price on T-Mobile's network, but it has no mobile hotspot worth the name — tethering runs at 3G speeds — no price guarantee, and traffic that is deprioritized behind other T-Mobile customers. Metro, T-Mobile's own prepaid brand, runs $25 to $40 all-in on the same towers with taxes included and no verification to maintain.

The Experience tiers are a different proposition. Beyond at $80 includes streaming services, satellite texting, unlimited hotspot and international data that no prepaid plan matches, and the 5-year price guarantee means the rate holds through a degree. If you want those things, the student discount is a small bonus on a plan you would have chosen anyway.
