“Free phone” deals are real — but they’re financed over 24-36 months as bill credits, not gifts. This page covers current free phone offers from major carriers and what to verify before signing up.
Three Common Free Phone Structures
Carriers structure “free phone” offers in three ways:
1. New-line free. A new line of service on a qualifying unlimited plan gets you a specific phone free, applied as bill credits. No trade-in required, but you must add a brand-new line (not upgrade an existing one).
2. Trade-in free. Trade in an eligible existing device, sign up for a qualifying plan, and get a phone free as bill credits. Trade-in valuation determines maximum credit — older or damaged devices yield lower credits.
3. Switcher free. Port in your number from another carrier, sign up for a qualifying plan, and receive bill credits covering the new device. Often combined with switcher rebates that cover early termination fees from your previous carrier.
All three structures pay back as bill credits over 24-36 months. Cancel the line early, change plans, or fail to maintain good standing — credits forfeit.

What “Free” Actually Costs
The most important framing: a “free iPhone” requires committing to 24-36 months of carrier service at premium plan rates. The math:
Example: “Free iPhone 17 on Verizon Unlimited Ultimate”
| Cost component | Amount |
|---|---|
| iPhone 17 retail price | $799 |
| Bill credits (over 36 months) | -$799 |
| Net device cost | $0 ✓ “Free” |
| Plan cost (36 months × $90/mo) | $3,240 |
| Total cost over 36 months | $3,240 |
Compare to: Buying the iPhone outright + using a $30/mo Visible Base Plan over 36 months = $799 device + $1,080 service = $1,879 total. The “free” phone deal costs $1,361 more over 36 months because the plan requirement is built into the math.
This isn’t a reason to avoid free phone deals — they’re often the right choice for users who’d pick a premium unlimited plan anyway. It’s a reason to honestly compare total cost of ownership before deciding.
What to Verify Before Signing Up
1. The plan you’re committing to. Free phone deals always require a qualifying plan. Calculate the plan cost over the credit term — that’s the real cost of the deal.
2. Your trade-in’s exact credit value. Don’t trust advertised maximums. Use each carrier’s online trade-in estimator with your specific device.
3. Whether you can stay on the qualifying plan for 24-36 months. Cancel or downgrade early, and remaining bill credits forfeit.
4. Coverage at your address. Verify the carrier’s network actually works at your home, work, and frequent travel destinations.
5. Whether you’d benefit more from buying the phone outright on a cheaper MVNO. For users who’d pick a $25-30/mo plan anyway, buying an iPhone outright + using Visible Base or US Mobile Starter often costs less than “free phone” deals over 36 months.
When Free Phone Deals Are Genuinely Worth It
Free phone deals make economic sense when:
- You’d pick a premium unlimited plan regardless of phone purchase
- You can commit to 24-36 months without plan changes
- Your trade-in qualifies for the maximum credit tier
- The carrier has strong coverage at your address
- You’re switching from a carrier where the switcher promo applies
Free phone deals are usually NOT the right call when:
- You’d otherwise pick a $25-30/mo MVNO plan
- You need flexibility to change plans within 24-36 months
- Your trade-in is older or damaged
- The carrier has weak coverage in your area
- You’d prefer to own your phone outright (no carrier lock-in)
